Introducing Christie Silvers, August 2007 Member Spotlight Winner

MUIB Member Spotlight Winner 2007

Member: Christie Silvers

Name of business/website: www.ChristieSilvers.com

Why did you start your business/website?
I wanted to be able to direct people to my writing, which consist of online articles, books and upcoming books.

What makes your business/website unique? Well, I guess it's unique because it's all about me. I'm a writer and I want people to see what I've written and what I am working on for the future.

How did you choose the focus for your business/website? The focus for my site is pretty easy; it's all about my writing. Since I'm a writer, I am the focus of my website.

What obstacles have you faced and how have you overcome them? My main obstacles are basically my own feelings toward my work. I've never felt like I should be praised for something that comes so easily to me, most of the time. Luckily, my pageview totals for my articles and published book have helped me realize that there MUST people out there who enjoy my work. That helps me to push forward and continue with my current book project.

What do you feel are the benefits of being a WAHM? Being home with my children is the biggest benefit. Even though my older girls are in school, I still like being able to drop everything and rush to school when the need arises. Being able to raise my children, without using babysitters or daycare, has always been my top priority. That's why most people know that I am a wife and mother first and foremost before anything else.

Do you have any specials that you are running right now? No, I may offer contests in the future where the winner would win a copy of my book, but right now there's nothing special going on.

How do you “get the word out” to get visitors to your site/to purchase products? I post the link to my website everywhere that I possibly can. I post it in my email signatures, on message boards and everywhere else in between. I've recently created a banner so that I can participate in banner exchanges and have posted it on different sites. I created a blog and use it to keep my readers updated on my current book project's progress and just my everyday life. Word of mouth is also a huge plus for a writer. I have many readers who come back everytime I publish something new and they are my biggest assets. They tell their friends about the things that they like and I'm always thanking them for it. Oh, and I also promote my articles and books through my MySpace page. Bulletins are a girls best friend!

What advice would you offer to other WAHMs? Be patient. Success doesn't happen overnight. Heck, I don't even think I've come anywhere near reaching success, but I'm trying. Be friendly and easy to approach. People like communicating with someone cheerful and friendly.

How do you take time to nurture yourself? I don't really think it's nurturing to me, but I stay up late at night in order to write when it's quiet and everyone is asleep. This is my favorite time of the day and the time when I'm most productive.

How do you balance the many roles you play in life? I prioritize my roles. I am mother first, wife second and writer third. My family comes first. I know that one day my writing will need to come first, but right now my girls need me more. I write when I have the free time from raising my children.

Tell us any other info you would like others to know about you and your family. I am currently working on the first book in a series titled, Vampires, Werewolves & Infatuation, Oh My! and I can't wait to complete it. This book has taken on a life of it's own. I'm just the vessel that it flows through. I'm very excited about it and truly plan on having it in every book store, one way or another. This is my "baby" and I can't wait for the world to meet it.

Why do you feel you should be in the MUIB Spotlight (Do NOT be modest, I know it is difficult to “sell” yourself, but tell us what makes you special and unique!): I try to stay focused on family matters when I write articles. Topics that are helpful to parents when it comes to raising their children. I am definitely a mom in business, but not in the traditional way like those of you out there selling your products. In a way, I am the product I suppose.
